She completed her MFA at San Francisco Art Institute with a Fulbright scholarship and has exhibited her work internationally. In recent years she has focused her practice on ceramics, watercolor and public art. Her work is inspired by colors and patterns in nature. We will be learning a bit of indigo history and then dive into how to make indigo vat. You will be provided with four organic cotton napkins to dye.  Monica will demonstrate several different resist techniques like stitching with thread and using wood clamps to create unique designs.  Try one or try them all!  We will then dip your napkins in the vats and watch the magic of indigo.  Gloves and all materials will be provided. After over a decade as a hairstylist in Downtown Seattle, she found herself searching for another creative pursuit. Eventually, she found natural dyeing and it was a perfect fit - combining her other favorite interests of sewing and gardening.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe first dye plant she grew was indigo and the moment she created a sea blue from an unassuming green plant she was hooked. In this workshop we’ll use observational journaling and proprioceptive writing techniques to explore these questions and generate new material.  We will take time to slow down, attune our senses, and discover our associations, reflections, and feelings in response to our surroundings. These pages will then serve as a seedbed for new poems, essays, creative nonfiction, or fiction pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA Blank journal will be provided.  Bring your own writing instrument(s) pen or pencil, colored pencils optional, but quite delightful.  This workshop is limited to 10 participants and is open to any level of writing experience: beginners, wannabes, and not writers are as welcome as published authors. Her 2018 Memoir Finding Mercy in this World received the Sarton Women’s Book Award.
