Lebanese Za'atar

Lebanese Za'atar

$4.50Price

Satureja hortensis

This special herb is an annual in the Northwest.  I grew it for the first time along with several other Lebanese and Palestinian plants in 2024 as an act of solidarity with the people of this region.  The delicate leaves and tiny purple flowers are a contrast to the strong fun flavor of this herb.  I was surprised how well they grew here and plan to grow Za’atar for years to come as I keep learning about the food traditions of the Lebanese and Palestinian people.

I bought this seed from True Love Seeds in Philadelphia- a wonderful seed company to support.

When I asked their permission to sell the seed, they introduced me to New Roots Community Farm in the Bronx, who had introduced the seed to True Love. True Love Seeds says this about New Roots Community Farm:

“New Roots Community Farm involves local south Bronx residents and refugees and asylee clients of International Rescue Committee to work together to address health issues in the Bronx and for vulnerable populations. The individual and communal beds allow refugees and asylees the opportunity to integrate into their communities at the local level and join the local food movement.”

100% of the profit from the sale of these seeds will be donated back to New Roots Community Farm.

Sow seeds indoors in May to transplant in warmer days of June.  Space plants 18”-24” apart.
