Lathyrus odoratus
Heirloom variety, the maroon and violet bicolored flowers will melt your heart. Especially strong scent and heat tolerant this is a must grow! Long stems are great for bunching. Gets 5” tall and needs trellising.
Sweet peas can be a challenge to germinate but once they get going they are tough. Increase germination by nicking the seed coat then pre-sprout indoors by soaking in a wet paper towel. Finally, sow in pots to transplant or plant the presprouted seeds. Alternately, direct sow in cool soils of late February/March. Give them time and they will typically sprout on thier own out in the garden. Sow ½” deep and thin to 4”.
