Zea mays

Stunning multicolored opalescent kernels on long narrow cobs, Glass Gem corn is a wonder to grow.  The history of this corn comes from Native Seeds SEARCH. Bred by part Cherokee farmer Carl Barnes in Oklahoma It is a flint corn and can be ground for polenta or popped for popcorn.  According to the blog post, Carl selected the most vivid and translucent kernels and, over many years Glass Gem was born. This variety was released by Native Seeds SEARCH in 2013 and has become quite popular over the years for its beauty and symbolism of the importance of open pollinated corn and farmer plant breeders.   Seed grown on Vashon Island by Forest Garden Farm.

Growing Corn

Plant seeds indoors to transplant or direct sow in warm soil.  I tend to start my corn in late April and transplant it out mid May to get a jump on the season as this corn is harvested as dry corn and not for fresh eating.  However I bet the seeds prefer to be direct sown so perhaps try both!  Plant at least 20 plants in a block pattern (not a long row) to get optimal pollination.  Stalks grow 5-6 feet tall.  Plants produce one maybe two cobs per plant.  Space 10” apart in rows at least two feet apart.  Plant in full sun.

75 days to maturity
