Phaseolus vulgaris
Long, flat, stringless pods with great flavor. Vigorous growth habit needs a sturdy and tall trellis to hold the bounty of beans Helda will produce. Beans grow 8-10” before the pods turn tough and can be eaten fresh, cooked or blanched and frozen. Harvest at least twice a week for continuous flowering and growth. An early producer, Helda will yield until late fall if picked regularly. Recommended to me by my seed mentor Lotus and her wife Barbara, I have grown these reliably for years.
Growing Pole Beans
Seeds can be started indoors but, in my experience, grow into healthier plants if direct sown. Wait until soil temperatures have warmed in mid to late May. Thin to 4”-6” apart. Provide a sturdy trellis when you sow the seeds or as soon as they germinate-don’t wait until the growth tips are growing and falling all over. Believe me I know because I have been guilty! They will recover but won’t be happy. Use anything you have around to prop them up- bamboo, rebar, an old piece of fencing perhaps? Grow in full sun.
