Brassica rapa
Mizuna has become a favorite stand-by green in salads, braising mixes, and fresh out of the garden nibbles. It grows happily all times of year, bolting quicker in the Summer but the flowers taste great and the leaves are still harvestable. I grow these mostly for Winter harvest as they are tolerant of a light frost. A must have for all of you greens eaters.
Growing Mustards
Mustard greens can be sown in early Spring all through September for a continuous supply. They germinate well in cooler soils and hold in well in the ground through a light frost over the winter. They can bolt quickly in the heat of the Summer months so find a shady spot for your July sowings. Mustards can be direct sown in the soil and germinate quickly. Thin to 4”-6” for baby or full sized greens. I eat the thinnings as baby greens and give space for others to grow larger for braising greens. You can also sow mustards indoors to transplant out but I find they bolt faster with this method.
