Brassica rapa
Small spoon shaped tender green with a mild mustard flavor. Grow for harvesting individual baby leaves to add to your salad or grow full size beautiful heads. Cold hardy. Sow throughout Spring and again in late summer for fall greens.
Growing Mustards
Mustard greens can be sown in early Spring all through September for a continuous supply. They germinate well in cooler soils and hold in well in the ground through a light frost over the winter. They can bolt quickly in the heat of the Summer months so find a shady spot for your July sowings. Mustards can be direct sown in the soil and germinate quickly. Thin to 4”-6” for baby or full sized greens. I eat the thinnings as baby greens and give space for others to grow larger for braising greens. You can also sow mustards indoors to transplant out but I find they bolt faster with this method.
