Phaseolus vulgaris
This large seeded mottled red bean has been the star of many winter soups around the farm and around the Island as we try to get more folks on board to grow their own dry beans. I love this variety as it will reliably dry down in time to harvest before the late September rains come. Large bean seeds can be trickier and Whipple does a great job year after year. Original seed from Adaptive Seeds-a great source for Open Pollinated seed great for NW growers.
Growing Dry Beans
Plant when soil has warmed in Early May. Water weekly through mid August then stop so the plants begin to dry down. Harvest the pods when plants are brown and crispy and the beans inside are dry enough to not leave an indentation with your thumbnail. Enjoy threshing with friends and family! It’s hard to resist a bowl full of bean pods waiting to be opened.
Packet contains ~ 40 seeds
